Kelsea McCrary is a 21 year old graphic design student from Bastrop. She is the editor-in-chief of the Chacahoula, one of the many things she does in her spare time. Despite what the interview below may lead you to believe, she is actually an interesting, fully functional and productive member of society. As a student who loves ULM and the Warhawks, she is involved in many student and community organizations, with a passion for increasing awareness for the arts and for reviving this area of Louisiana. For those of you that would like to know more, visit the Student Publications office in Stubbs 131. She's held captive there most days out of the week.
How long have you been cutting rug?
As in dancing? [Yeah] Since I was three.
What's your dream stage?
I've always been in love with the Radio City Rockettes. I'd love to try out.
Which dance celebrity do you admire?
Most definitely Mia Michaels. She is forthright and honest in everything, even if some people think it's misguided or get offended. It shows in her work, which is so creative and really uses music and movement perfectly together.
What do you do with the butterflies in your stomach before you perform?
There's really nothing you can do. Just take deep breaths and know (or hope) that the practice will pay off in performance.
You coach, also. How's that?
I don't anymore because of school, but while I did, it was a blast. I love to teach.
Every coach wishes she can step into their dancers. Do you?
Oh, yeah, of course. Especially when it's something you've created that they're dancing. You have a vision in your head and you wish they could see it, too.
What do you do with your bad kids?
Honestly, I haven't really had a problem with that. I've mostly taught middle- and high-schoolers, but any elementary kids I had weren't really bad, just rambunctious. Usually, I just go right along with them, and it's always a lot of fun
Where do you get inspiration for your graphic creativity?
Everywhere! It's in everything. My classmates, magazines, billboards, the news, dancing, conversations, clothes. . . .
Do you work so much you dream it?
I don't sleep. But seriously, sometimes, before recital, I used to do the routines in my sleep.
What's your motivation?
I don't even know, honestly. I guess just to make the most out of whatever is happening to me and around me. No regrets.
How does it feel to be the baby of three kids?
I love it! Lots of perks. I got out of a lot of chores growing up. If I got in trouble, I could blame it on the fact that I was the baby and didn't know any better. . . . I was pretty clever, if I do say so myself.
McCrazy…when and how did you get it?
I was a freshman in high school, and a visiting school we were playing for a football game misspelled my name in their program, and it kind of stuck.
Would you eat steak for breakfast?
No, I don't really like a lot of steak and things like that. I'm not quite a vegetarian, but red meat is definitely not my favorite.
Would you ever date outside your race or creed?
I think who you fall in love with is who you fall in love with, no matter the race or creed.
Can give us hints/context-clues of your choice of curse word?
I try not to say any, but when one slips out it, usually starts with an "s" and ends with a "t."
Which hunk do you secretly admire on campus?
Oh, he already knows. It's not a secret anymore.
[Laugh] He has no name?
Well. . . if you must know . . . H.P. Jones. But if he's not available, there's another young man walking around campus who looks an awful lot like Hercules. You know who you are.
What do you hate doing, but still do it?
Hmmm. I don't know if there is anything that I really just hate to do. Does going to the doctor and getting a shot count? I'm still five years old at heart.
I like that. I was actually referring to a bad habit.
Oh! Biting my nails. Sometimes, if I'm stressed out, I don't even know I'm doing it.
How did you spend your valentine's day?
I was with my family in Missouri. Not the most romantic Valentine's Day, but that stuff is for sissies.
What is a pet peeve?
I hate gum. It's gross and unnecessary.
Subway or Quiznos? Why?
Both. I could eat sandwiches all day every day.
Recommend a restaurant in town and why the readers should try it?
Lu San. It has a great atmosphere and the food is delicious.
Which faculty member do you secretly wish you could party with? Why?
Dara Engler, because I know we are destined to eventually become bff's. And if I could just have an all out faculty party, [I'll party with] the whole art department, because they're hippies at heart (Mr. Ratcliff!) plus Kevin Unter. He's pretty fun.
Let us into how your mind works...
My mind is all over the place. I can carry on five conversations at once. It's probably not very healthy or conducive to retaining info, but I can do it. Normally I am pretty laid back, but in recent years I have become a scheduling freak. I'm not really happy about that, either!
Schedule freak, huh? Please give us a piece of your mind about following schedules.
My friends say I am a student planner Nazi. I freak out if I can't find it. But, they'll thank me one day. I keep their lives in order, too!
